Jason Howland
Jason Howland, an honors graduate of Williams College (1993), is a Grammy Award winning producer, Emmy Award winning arranger, and Tony nominated producer.
Howland is the composer of Broadway’s 2005 TONY nominated Little Women - The Musical which starred Sutton Foster and Maureen McGovern, and also composed the score for the off- Broadway musical Blessing in Disguise.
Howland won an Emmy Award in 2007 for creating and composing the Christmas special Handel's Messiah Rocks, a symphonic-rock concert based on the classical oratorio by George F. Handel that was recorded with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops for PBS and SONY RECORDS and which had its European premiere at the Wiener Raimund Theater in Vienna Easter 2016.
Howland was nominated for a Tony Award in 1999 for co-producing the hit Broadway play The Loneseo by Martin McDonagh.
Howland won a Grammy in 2015 for producing the Original Cast Album of Beautiful -The Carole King Musical.
Most recently Howland composed Paradise Square about the draft riots in NYC in 1863 (world premiere at Berkeley Repertory Theater - Jan 2019), Ikiru for Horipro Productions (world premier, Tokyo, October, 2018) and Last Days of Summer (Kansas City Rep September, 2018, Goerge Street Playhouse, October 2019).
Howland has been a musical director, arranger and conductor on Broadway for twenty years. He is the Arranger and Music Supervisor for the smash hit Beautiful - The Carole King Musical (Broadway, West End, US National Tour, Tokyo, Australian National Tour, UK National Tour). He has served as musical supervisor/director/conductor and arranger for Broadway’s Bonnie and Clyde, Wonderland (Broadway, UK Tour), Jekyll & Hyde (Broadway, US Tour), Les Miserables, The Civil War, The Scarlet Pimpernel , Boy George’s Taboo in addition to guest conducting the Broadway musical sensation Spiderman created by U2’s Bono and The Edge.
He has worked extensively with Frank Wildhorn on a number of projects on Broadway and across the globe over the last twenty years. Howland orchestrated and arranged Wildhorn’s adaptation of the Japanese Anime sensation Death Note which had it’s world premiere in Tokyo in April of 2015, orchestrated and supervised the world premiere of Mata Hari for the Seoul based production company EMK, and orchestrated and arranged The Man Who Laughs (Seoul/Tokyo). Upcoming projects with Wildhorn include Your Lie in April for Toho (Japan), Fist of the North Star (Horipro) and CASANOVA for Vienna’s producing organization VBW.
Howland arranged and supervised the touring production of the hit film Flash Dance, and supervised the US National Tour of the mega-band QUEEN’s hit musical We Will Rock You and has worked extensively world wide as an arranger, orchestrator, programmer and music producer for touring productions including South Pacific, Elf, Memphis, La Cage Aux Folles, Anything Goes, Bullets Over Broadway, The Sound of Music, and A Chorus Line, as well as Dreamwork’s Shrek and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.
Howland has appeared as a guest conductor with the Atlanta Symphony, the Florida Orchestra, The New Jersey Symphony, The Maine State Symphony, The Memphis Symphony, The Maui Symphony Pops and The Arizona Symphony and has conducted in concert across the country for such notables as Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Brandy, Bebe & Cece Winans, Carl Anderson, LaChanze, Linda Eder, Davis Gaines, Sebastian Bach, David Hasselhoff, Rob Evan, Kate Shindle, Lauren Kennedy, Davis Gaines, The Kingston Trio, and Lizz Wright.
Howland has worked as a composer, arranger, conductor, and producer on a number of recording projects including: Beautiful - The Carole King Musical (Producer, Grammy Award), Handel’s Messiah Rocks (Producer, composer EMMY AWARD, conductor); Little Women – the Musical (OBC; producer/composer/arranger); Wonderland (Producer, Arranger), Death Note (Producer, Arranger); Boy George’s Taboo; Bonnie and Clyde (OBC; Musical Director/Conductor); Japanese theater star Megumi Hamada’s solo CD Attitude (Producer, arranger, conductor); the Grammy- nominated cast album of Jekyll & Hyde (Musical Director/Conductor/Vocal Arranger); The Dreams in You, for the September 11th Fund (Producer, Composer); The Scarlet Pimpernel (OBC; Associate Producer/Additional Arrangements); Atlantic Records' release of The Civil War (Choral Conductor, Arranger); the double disk compilation album Jekyll & Hyde : The Complete Work (Vocal Arranger); the solo album for acclaimed international harpist Jung Kwak (Conductor); and Linda Eder's albums Christmas Stays the Same and It’s Time (Arranger/Pianist/Vocal Arranger).
