Broadway Junior Project

Music Theatre International’s Broadway Junior® Project provides schools that lack arts programming with the FREE training and materials necessary to present a Broadway Junior® musical production in their school.  The goals of the Project are to:

  • Assist schools that currently have no full time arts specialist to create an infusion of the arts and an arts culture within the school
  • Build a strong community through the arts that includes the school, parents and members of the community at large
  • Engage as many students as possible in all aspects and areas of the arts
  • Encourage the connection of arts programming to curriculum including assessment

Schools interested in being part of Music Theatre International’s Broadway Junior Project must fill out an application to be one of three winning schools selected for 2016/2017.

The three winning schools will receive:

  • A license to perform a Broadway Junior musical of their choice
  • A ShowKit® of materials that supplies teachers with all the resources they will need to direct, choreograph and teach music like a true professional
  • Professional development workshops for the schools’ teachers

About the Professional Development Workshops

These workshops will provide training in all areas of musical theatre production as well as curriculum connections and community involvement. Throughout the entire process of rehearsal and performance a local professional Production Advisor selected by MTI will offer guidance in these same areas while continuing to empower the teaching teams to run the program by themselves.

Appropriate for Elementary School?
Hello, I'm wondering from those who have done this show before, if it would be appropriate for 4-5th graders. I only ask because I know the original B'way musical has themes of violence and alcoholism among other "adult themes." Have these things been changed at all for the Jr. version, or are they true to the original? For example, does Sarah still get drunk in Havanah??Thanks!

Has anyone added an ensemble to Into the Woods Jr.? I'm wondering how doable this is, and how much opportunity for involvement the added ensemble would have. Thanks for your input.

13, the Musical. Dealing with fear.
Just finished a production of 13. LOVE LOVE LOVE this sweetly innocent funny sassy show..and yes, I said innocent. BUT I am getting A LOT of flack from my community. I was so shocked...all I saw were these typical/stereotypical characters played by lovely children experiencing awkwardness and beauty...I have found out there have been calls to my superintendent and my principal about the content. I thought I had lost my mind. I thought I had been punked. Have I missed the adolescent curiosity and exploration? The fear of being rejected for , well, anything? The need to be accepted and the desperation to be a part of something? I have NEVER shied away from any conversation with my students. I answer simply the questions asked, and I always refer them to their parents first for their input. Many colleagues are reeling as well. I didn't think it was insulting or complicated at all. I thought and still think it was beautiful and funny and uncomfortable and amazing...just like adolescence. Please advise. How do I bring a community back together? The knives in my back are beginning to sting.

Avenue Q Licensing Question
I heard a rumor that MTI required performance groups doing Avenue Q to either rent their puppets or build according to the original design specifications, but I couldn't find a comfirmation of this on the show page. So, how about it -- are original puppet designs legal? I should note that this is in reference to a college production.
