SIDE 1
(ALADDIN and JASMINE run on laughing.)
JASMINE
Wow, you live here?
ALADDIN
It's not the palace, but hey, it's home.
JASMINE
From what I hear, that palace is more like a prison that a home. At least for the princess, anyway.
ALADDIN
I hear Princess Jasmine is so spoiled, she can't even pick her own nose - she has it done for her by the royal nose-picker.
JASMINE
(offended)
It was only that one time and I--
(catches herself)
Uhm, I mean, it can't be easy when people only see the "princess" and not the person inside!
ALADDIN
Hey, I can see the person inside you, and I think she's pretty cool.
JASMINE
Thanks. And I really like how you gave the food you stole to the other starving peasants.
ALADDIN
Well, someone's got to help them. Those dumb old laws sure make it tough if you're poor.
JASMINE
We should tell the sultan to change those laws to make sure all his people are happy, right?
ALADDIN
And how are we going to do that? We're just a couple of beggars.
JASMINE
But we're the future, Aladdin. We can change the world. Anything's possible, with you by my side.
ALADDIN
Hey, I'll be the sultan if you'll be my princess. Deal?
JASMINE
Deal.
SIDE 2
(JAFAR, IAGO and ALADDIN stand before the magical portal. The TIGER GOD holds the lamp.)
JAFAR
Remember, take the lamp and nothing else.
(ALADDIN steps through and takes the lamp from the TIGER GOD. Jewels shimmer before him, held aloft by the spirits of the cave: the magical JUNIOR DJINN.)
ALADDIN
Man, with just one of these diamonds, I could feed all the starving beggars of Agrabah for a year!
JAFAR
The lamp! Hand it to me, boy!
(ALADDIN hands the lamp through the portal to JAFAR so that they each hold one end.)
ALADDIN
Take it. And pull me out. I'm so hungry, I could eat a camel!
(A JUNIOR DJINN dangles a banana in front of him.)
JAFAR
The lamp is almost mine, mine, all mine!
ALADDIN
What harm's one banana gonna do, right?
(As ALADDIN grabs the banana, there is instant chaos inside the Cave of Wonders.)
TIGER GOD
Theif! You were told to take nothing but the lamp!
ALADDIN
Oh, come on, it's just a banana!
TIGER GOD
Bananas count, infidel!
(The JUNIOR DJINN pull ALADDIN back into the darkness.)
ALADDIN
Jafar, help me!
JAFAR
I'll help you meet your doom, street rat!
(struggling to pull the lamp out of ALADDIN's grip)
Just - give - me - that - lamp!!!
(The JUNIOR DJINN pull ALADDIN back into the wild chaos of the cave, yanking the lamp right out of JAFAR's greedy little hands.)
No! I had the lamp in my hands! Cure you, boooooy!
(JAFAR and IAGO vanish as the VENDORS transform the stage into the interior of the Cave of Wonders. ALADDIN is trapped.)
ALADDIN
Sure is dark in here. Wish I had some light, then I could dig my way out. Hey, what about this lamp? Couldn't hurt, right?
(ALADDIN rubs the lamp, which starts to glow and shake. He puts it down and backs away in awe as the JUNIOR DJINN wildly prepare for the arrival of... the GENIE, a high-speed ball of magical possibilities.)
GENIE
(like a fabulous lounge singer)
Thank you, thank you very much. Boy it's good to be back. Let me tell you, seven-hundred years inside a lamp can give you such a crick in the neck!
(to ALADDIN, pointing a "mic" in his face)
Hi, here on business? Having a good time? Where you from? Waiter, another bowl of hummus for table number two, compliments of Mr. Lucky!
(ALADDIN just stares, dumbfounded)
So what's your name - no, wait, don't tell me, let me guess. Sinbad? Hercules? Bruce? Come on, kid, work with me here - people are watching.
ALADDIN
Al -- Aladdin.
GENIE
Nice to meet you, Al Aladdin. Gee, you're a lot smaller than my last master. Or maybe it's me, tell me the truth: do these earrings make me look fat?
ALADDIN
Wait a minute. You mean, I'm your master?
GENIE
Ladies and gentlemen, he can be taught! Yep, I'm a slave to the master of the lamp. So what would you wish of me, oh master mine?
(nothing)
That's your cue, Al.
(to the Audience)
Ha ha, it's like pulling teeth here, folks.
ALADDIN
Uhm, you mean, I get a wish?
GENIE
Three, count 'em, three! No substitutions, exchanges or refunds!
ALADDIN
Now I know I'm dreaming!
(The GENIE gives ALADDIN an owner's manual.)
GENIE
Master, read this owner's manual while I blow the roof off this joint!
(to the conductor)
Maestro, give me four for nothing!
SIDE 3
(ALADDIN puts the magic lamps on the floor and talks to it. JAFAR and IAGO hide behind a curtain, spying.)
ALADDIN
All I have to do is answer the Princess's question and I'm home free, right, Genie?
GENIE (V.O.)
Right, Al. Just be yourself and speak from your heart!
IAGO
Boss, it's the street rat!
JAFAR
Yes, and he's got the magical lamp! Shhhh, here comes the Princess.
(JAFAR and IAGO hide behind the curtain. JASMINE enters with a chip on her shoulder.)
JASMINE
So, Prince Ali Abooboo--
ALADDIN
Uhm, that's Ababwa.
JASMINE
Whatever. So, if you were sultan, what is the biggest problem you would fix in Agrabah?
ALADDIN
Well, Princess, the beggars are the biggest problem in Agrabah.
JASMINE
Oh, sure, blame the poor, homeless beggars! You're just like all the other princes--
ALADDIN
Let me finish! I'd give the beggars jobs and food and a place to live. That way, they wouldn't be beggars anymore. And everyone would be happy.
JASMINE
(the right answer)
Exaclty!
ALADDIN
Totally! We have to make the world--
JASMINE
--our own! We can change the world--
ALADDIN
--and if we need to change some dumb old laws--
JASMINE
--that keep the people in chains of poverty--
ALADDIN
--or make them marry someone they don't want to--
JASMINE
--when the perfect person is standing right in front of them--
ALADDIN, JASMINE
We have to change those laws!
(JASMINE is won over and hugs ALADDIN impulsively.)
JASMINE
Prince Ali Ababwa, you're too good to be true! Do you ever get lonely being a prince?
ALADDIN
Only every day. Until now, that is.
JASMINE
There's got to be more to life than what's inside the four walls of the palace.
ALADDIN
There's a whole new world out there, just waiting for us.
(ALADDIN whistles for AVIS, who flies around them in a wide circle, and finally docks at the side of the Balcony. ALADDIN steps on and beckons to JASMINE. She steps onto the carpet as ALADDIN puts his arm around her to keep her safe. Meanwhile, JAFAR grabs the lamp and tiptoes out.)
