How Acts of Kindness Can Make for a Better Halloween
How Acts of Kindness Can Make for a Better Halloween
Who knew that Halloween and National Bullying Prevention Month were both in October? With "Spooky Season" off to a great start, we thought we would get some advice from our "Official Spokes-Pumpkin" about how to make this Halloween a fun experience for everyone!
A single act of kindness this Halloween might just be enough to make an impact on your family, your school, and even your community! Here are some tips from Spookley the Square Pumpkin himself to make this October count!
An Acts of Kindness Trick or Treat Bag
Candy isn't the only kind of treat. Acts of kindness have a lasting impact and can inspire others to do their own acts. As a daily activity for your and your students, note an act of kindness you witnessed or did yourself. Write these things down on a slip of paper and put it in a trick or treat bag. At the end of the month, display your collection for everyone to see! Learn more about other activities and resources for educators here .
Take The Pledge
In honor of National Bullying Prevention Month, Spookley wants you to "Speak Up, Reach Out, and Be A Friend". Go to https://www.pacer.org/bullying/classroom/elementary/spookley/ to take the pledge to be an ally and stop bullying when you see it.
Have an Orange Craft Day
Unity Day is October 20 . Wear and share orange. Create your own t-shirts and accessories out of orange material with your friends to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion and to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying. Or take it to the next level and create your own Spookley costume.
Have a Movie Night!
Turn off the lights, make some popcorn, and sit down to watch a movie about how a little pumpkin being different can make a big impact. Make sure to ask questions during and after the movie about Spookley, and the other pumpkins on the farm.
Spookley the Square Pumpkin can be seen on Disney Junior and Netflix and is available for rental or purchase via all of the major digital platforms (e.g., Amazon, Apple, Google, YouTube).
Keep Spookley in Your Home
Being kind and accepting should be a year-round activity - not just for the month of October. Spookley should be able to make an impact on us every day. Keep a Spookley plush in your room, or a craft in your home as a reminder. And if you want more, meet Spookley's friends during other holiday seasons. For other ways to bring Spookley's message home, check out these resources for parents and caregivers.
Use these tips and tools to make sure everyone knows what they bring to the table this year. And if you see something - don't be afraid to speak up! Ask the right questions - and remember: your differences are what make you unique!
