Rent the School Edition
Our school is contemplating proposing RENT: TSE for our fall musical. We have roughly 2,500 students in medium size city in Wisconsin. We are looking to find other schools who have produced RENT as a means to address questions we may have. We have strong student support for the show, but we are mindful of the community reaction. Here are some questions that we have;1) What rationale did you use in the proposal of RENT?2) Did you have issues with males or females playing the roles of: Angel, Collins, Maureen?3) If you produced the show, did you receive any backlash from teh community, or were they pretty supportive?Any recommendations or personal antidotes about your production will be helpful for us in making our decision. Our plan is to overview the perusal, and then we would like to talk to some of the schools that produce the show before pitching the show to our administration. If we receive teh go ahead, we will have a student and parent meeting to talk about why we are doing the show.

"crap game" language for elementary school G&D, jr.
Has anyone who's done Guys & Dolls Jr. run into any issues with parents becoming upset with the language of the "crap game"? I'm in the middle of auditions, and one of my parent volunteers thought parents would be sensitive to the word "crap". I explained that it doesn't mean "excrement" in this sense at all, it's a game of dice, but now I'm worried. It's so integral to the plot and constantly mentioned throughout the script...do I need to be concerned?

Score info needed
Hi, I am currently on the slate to MD Seven Brides..... and The Wedding Singer. I am looking for more specific score questions: difficulty of parts, superfluous parts, etc. If any of you MD's or Conductors are willing to field my questions or refer me to specific websites, chatrooms, etc. I would really appreciate it. I am trying to recruit my players early as the good ones tend to be booked up by the time the actual material arrives. Thanks

elementary musical suggestions
I am really stressing over choosing my musical this year. I am looking for something appropriate for 3rd-5th grade for up to 40 students. The last two years we have done Alice in Wonderland Jr. and Willy Wonka, Kids. I perused Jungle Book Kids (too easy), Once on this Island Jr. (too hard), Aladdin Kids (a possibility) and the Little Mermaid, Jr. (my favorite so far). People have also suggested Seussical and the Phantom Tollbooth which I don't know anything about. I am blessed with a lot of strong boys this year in 5th grade and I want to find something that features them all. The Little Mermaid seems to have a lot of parts, but looks difficult, especially the part singing. Aladdin Kids looks more doable, but wouldn't feature all my "stars" and might not challenge them enough. Any suggestions or insights are appreciated!

Don't be fooled - Little Mermaid is HARD
We just finished performing this show this past weekend, and let me tell you - it was a difficult run. The kids did "okay", but were very upset because of the difficulty of this show. TONS of music and cues. TONS of set changes. Special lighting effect, sounds cues, lots of costumes, difficult staging requirement - and high G abound and can't really be changed or fixed. Just hope you have some high singing sopranos! Just a lot of stuff to do and take care of.BUT the worst part, was the score. It is nearly impossible to play (I don't know who the arranger was - but they obviously *don't* play the piano. A 3rd of it was hard, a 3rd was very hard, and a 3rd of it was impossible to play. Literally impossible because of the writing. Notes out of the reach of your hands and very difficult cross patterns and runs. You would think they would have "dumbed it down" a bit for the general music market, but they didn't - so be prepared to use the CD). Also, many, many mistakes and typo in the actual score. So spend a day going through it with a fine tooth comb to make sure you are doing it right. I had kids in tears on the first show day - and we were *well* prepared. Lovely show, just very, very hard to pull off in the general music market. sigh.
