I am really stressing over choosing my musical this year. I am looking for something appropriate for 3rd-5th grade for up to 40 students. The last two years we have done Alice in Wonderland Jr. and Willy Wonka, Kids. I perused Jungle Book Kids (too easy), Once on this Island Jr. (too hard), Aladdin Kids (a possibility) and the Little Mermaid, Jr. (my favorite so far). People have also suggested Seussical and the Phantom Tollbooth which I don't know anything about. I am blessed with a lot of strong boys this year in 5th grade and I want to find something that features them all. The Little Mermaid seems to have a lot of parts, but looks difficult, especially the part singing. Aladdin Kids looks more doable, but wouldn't feature all my "stars" and might not challenge them enough. Any suggestions or insights are appreciated!
Don't be fooled - Little Mermaid is HARD
Don't be fooled - Little Mermaid is HARD
We just finished performing this show this past weekend, and let me tell you - it was a difficult run. The kids did "okay", but were very upset because of the difficulty of this show. TONS of music and cues. TONS of set changes. Special lighting effect, sounds cues, lots of costumes, difficult staging requirement - and high G abound and can't really be changed or fixed. Just hope you have some high singing sopranos! Just a lot of stuff to do and take care of.BUT the worst part, was the score. It is nearly impossible to play (I don't know who the arranger was - but they obviously *don't* play the piano. A 3rd of it was hard, a 3rd was very hard, and a 3rd of it was impossible to play. Literally impossible because of the writing. Notes out of the reach of your hands and very difficult cross patterns and runs. You would think they would have "dumbed it down" a bit for the general music market, but they didn't - so be prepared to use the CD). Also, many, many mistakes and typo in the actual score. So spend a day going through it with a fine tooth comb to make sure you are doing it right. I had kids in tears on the first show day - and we were *well* prepared. Lovely show, just very, very hard to pull off in the general music market. sigh.

Ariel's Transformation
Curious how others have handled Ariel's transformation. How many "fly" her? Anyone have video or pictures of your transformation? Curious.

Hello,I was considering Willy Wonka for my elementary Drama Club, but now that I see Little Mermaid, Jr. is available for licensing, I am thinking about choosing it instead. I work with a large group (my Seussical, Jr. had 81 participants).I have one boy who I would really like to feature - he was Jojo in last year's Seuss Jr. Since I am not too familiar with the Little Mermaid songs for this version, can anyone tell me which male part would have the most featured singing? I would really like to showcase his talent, and it will be his last year in elementary school, so I want to make sure I at least consider him for the appropriate role.Thank you!
