Arthur Schwartz

Arthur Schwartz (1900-1984) was the son of a lawyer who had his first contact with show business playing piano for the silent films.

He went through college and law school and worked as a teacher and as a lawyer, while writing songs for college shows and later with a professional career as a composer in mind.

He composed music for, among others, GRAND STREET FOLLIES, 1926; THE NEW YORKER, 1927;
PRINCESS CHARMING, HERE COMES THE BRIDE, 1930; THE BAND WAGON, 1931; NICE GOINGS ON, 1933;
AT HOME ABROAD, 1935; STARS IN YOUR EYES, 1939; AMERICAN JUBILEE, 1940; PARK AVENUE, 1946;
A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN, 1951; BY THE BEAUTIFUL SEA, 1954; THE GAY LIFE, 1961; JENNIE, 1963; THAT'S ENTERTAIMENT, 1972; NICHOLAS NICKLEBY (lyrics and music), 1975; an anthology of his work, DANCING IN THE DARK, produced at the Manhattan Theatre Club, 1979.

He teamed with Howard Dietz in 1928 and they worked together successfully for many years. Schwartz wrote numerous scores for films, including: THAT GIRL FROM PARIS, 1936, THANK YOUR LUCKY STARS, 1943, EXCUSE MY DUST, 1951, THE BAND WAGON, 1953, YOU'RE NEVER TOO YOUNG, 1955, and also produced COVER GIRL, 1944, and NIGHT AND DAY, 1946.

His success remains chiefly as a writer of revue material and of individual songs.
